    How to Get Your Business Cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity

    AI assistants are becoming the front door for local search, and they pick sources differently than Google does. Here's what actually makes a business citable.

    A growing share of "who should I hire for this" questions never reach a search results page. They get asked to an assistant, which returns one answer, naming one or two businesses.

    That is a materially different game than ranking. There is no position three to settle for.

    The invisible failure: your site renders, crawlers see nothing

    This is the single most common problem, and it is almost always a surprise.

    Many modern marketing sites are single-page applications. The server returns a nearly empty HTML shell, and JavaScript renders the content in the browser. Open the page and it looks perfect. Fetch the URL the way a crawler does and there is nothing there but a <div id="root">.

    Googlebot has a rendering pipeline and will eventually execute that JavaScript. Most AI crawlers do not. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and OAI-SearchBot largely take the raw HTML response at face value.

    The test takes one command:

    No match means no citation — regardless of how good the content is.

    The fix is server-side rendering or static generation, so the HTML that leaves your server already contains the words. For a marketing site this is usually a build-time change, not a rewrite.

    Write in extractable units

    Assistants quote passages, not pages. Content shaped as one continuous argument is hard to lift from; content shaped as discrete, self-contained claims is easy.

    What that means concretely:

    • Answer the question in the first sentence under each heading. Don't build to a conclusion — state it, then support it.
    • Use headings that are literally the questions people ask. "How much does an AI receptionist cost?" is a better <h2> than "Pricing considerations."
    • Prefer specific, attributable statements over hedged prose. "Response within five minutes" survives extraction; "responding promptly is important" does not.
    • Include an explicit summary block. A short, factual TL;DR near the top is disproportionately likely to be the passage that gets quoted.
    • Add a real FAQ section. Q&A pairs are the single most liftable format there is, which is why they show up so often in AI answers.

    Give assistants unambiguous facts

    Structured data does not make your content better, but it does remove guesswork about what your content is. Worth having on a local business site:

    • Organization and LocalBusiness — who you are, where, contact details.
    • BlogPosting on every article — headline, author, publish and modified dates.
    • FAQPage wherever you have genuine Q&A.
    • BreadcrumbList so hierarchy is explicit.

    Also: canonical URLs on every page, absolute URLs in Open Graph tags, and a sitemap.xml referenced from robots.txt. These are unglamorous and they are the difference between a crawler that finds everything and one that finds your homepage.

    Publish consistently on what you actually do

    The uncomfortable part: there is no technical trick that substitutes for having said something worth quoting.

    Assistants build a sense of which sources are authoritative on which topics. That comes from repeated, specific, first-hand writing on a narrow subject — not from a large volume of general content. A business that publishes twenty genuinely useful posts about AI voice agents for home services will be cited on that topic ahead of one that published two hundred posts about business in general.

    Write about the problems you solve, using the specifics only you have: what actually happens on those calls, what the numbers look like, what fails and why.

    A short checklist

    1. curl your pages with a crawler user-agent. Confirm the words are in the raw HTML.
    2. Give every page its own title, description and canonical URL.
    3. Add Organization, BlogPosting and FAQPage structured data.
    4. Publish sitemap.xml and reference it from robots.txt.
    5. Name AI crawlers explicitly in robots.txt.
    6. Lead every section with the answer.
    7. Publish regularly, narrowly, and from experience.

    The first item is worth more than the other six combined, and it is the one almost nobody checks.

    How is AI search optimization different from traditional SEO?

    Traditional SEO competes for a ranked position on a results page. AI search competes to be the source an assistant quotes when it composes a single answer. That rewards clear, extractable, well-attributed statements of fact over keyword coverage and link volume.

    Do AI crawlers run JavaScript?

    Mostly not. Crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and OAI-SearchBot generally read the raw HTML your server returns. If your content only appears after client-side JavaScript executes, those crawlers see an empty page.

    Does structured data help with AI search?

    Yes. Schema.org markup — particularly Organization, LocalBusiness, BlogPosting and FAQPage — gives assistants unambiguous facts to work from instead of forcing them to infer meaning from prose.

    Should I block AI crawlers in robots.txt?

    If you want to be cited, no. Note that Google-Extended and Applebot-Extended are treated as opt-in by those crawlers, so a permissive wildcard rule is not always enough — name them explicitly.
